What is the CPLP™?

“CPLP” stands for "Certified Professional in Learning & Performance."

_ The CPLP™ certification program is administered by the American Society for Training and Development Certification Institute (ASTD CI). ASTD CI accredits individuals working in the workplace learning & performance industry. The workplace learning & performance industry encompasses many disciplines including instructional design, training delivery, human performance improvement, organizational development, knowledge management, coaching, leadership and career development.

Who uses the CPLP™?

Workplace learning & performance (WLP) professionals from around the world - with varied backgrounds and industry experience - have sought the CPLP™ to achieve professional and personal success in and bring value to their organizations. Becoming a Certified Professional in Learning & Performance™ allows WLPs to standout and maintain the edge over their workplace competition.

Employee Learning Week 2009

Just a reminder – ASTD Employee Learning Week (ELW) will be December 7th – 11th 2009.  Have you determined some ways your organization may include Employee Learning Week activities in your calendar?

ASTDBR would be proud to include your participation in our press releases and ELW activity report to ASTD.  You may even be listed on the ASTD Champions Web site; this year Amedysis, Neighbors Federal Credit Union and LSU are all highlighted at the national level.  We’d love to hear of your participation and your creative ideas.  Let’s all start planning now!

Here are some ideas. You will see that most of them would have little to no impact to your annual budget and will be beneficial to you, your department, and your organization.

  • Post learning tools and tips daily on your e-newsletters, blast e-mails, or social networking pages such as Facebook or LinkedIn
  • Offer daily learning quizzes and prizes
  • Launch company blogs on workplace learning topics
  • Post employee testimonials on the value of learning
  • Announce your 2010 calendar of learning events and department resources – including introductions of your workplace learning team
  • Report your 2009 training statistics
  • Post the Employee Learning Week logo or banner on your Web site or e-correspondence
  • Involve your CEO and senior executives in recognizing and communicating the value learning brings to your organization
  • Hold an employee excellence development awards recognition or company accomplishments meeting
  • Schedule a brown bag “lunch and learn” during this time period
  • Work with your Human Resources team to conduct a Career Fair and/or Networking Fair,
  • Conduct a company-wide book study group
  • Help employees create individual development plans to increase and enhance their skills
  • Conduct assessment and/or satisfaction surveys during this week

More detailed information on these activities from across the country can be found at www.employeelearningweek.org/champion.html .

The ASTD Baton Rouge Chapter has been named an ASTD “Champion of Learning” for two consecutive years.  Last year we received East Baton Rouge City Parish and State of Louisiana proclamations recognizing Employee Learning Week.  Such recognition is a testament to YOU, your professionalism and your advocacy for our industry.  Thank you for your dedication and service.

Organizations for Learning Professionals - ASTD

September 25, 10:22 AMWorkplace Training and Development ExaminerLenn Millbower

Today we examine one of the foremost organizations for learning professionals - ASTD.

This is the first in a new series listing the various non-profit national training, educational, and speaking organizations that any training and development professional should be familiar with. We start with one of the largest organizations in training, ASTD.

ASTD, formerly the American Society for Training and Development, was first conceived during a training committee meeting of the American Petroleum Institute in 1942. In 1943, a group of 15 met for the first board meeting of the American Society of Training Directors in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The goal of the organization was to raise the standards and prestige of the industrial training profession and to further the professional’s education and development. Since that time, ASTD has grown to a very large size. It is now one of the world’s largest associations dedicated to workplace learning and performance professionals.

ASTD’s members come from more than 100 countries and connect locally in more than 130 U.S. chapters and with more than 30 international partners. Members work in thousands of organizations of all sizes, in government, as independent consultants, and suppliers.

ASTD listed its mission as follows. “Through exceptional learning and performance, we create a world that works better.”

The organization also states the main services it offers as follows.

  • Providing resources for learning and performance professionals, educators, and students—research, analysis, benchmarking, online information, books, and other publications

  • Bringing professionals together in conferences, workshops, and online

  • Offering professional development opportunities for learning practitioners, from a Job Bank and Career Center, to certificate programs and the only credential offered in the field: the Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP)

  • Serving as the voice of the profession to the media and to public policy makers in the U.S., and collaborates with other associations, organizations, and educational institutions to advance the profession

  • Recognizing excellence and sets the standard for best practices in learning and performance.

ASTD runs an annual conference where over 10,000 training and development professionals from the world over gather to share best practices. The next ASTD International Conference and Exposition will take place May 16-19, 2010 in Chicago, IL.

Writing Tip: Use Plain Language

Adapted from Writing to Get Things Done® seminar

A Guideline for Sentence Length

Make your business writing easy to read by using short sentences:

  • In letters, memos and e-mails, use an average sentence length of 12 to 15 words.

  • In formal reports and technical documents, keep the average sentence length to about 20.

Short sentences usually contain one main idea that readers can quickly grasp and easily remember.  In contrast, long sentences, with multiple ideas, can be difficult to understand and remember.

Three Simple Ways to Shorter Sentences

You can use three simple techniques to shorten your sentences:

  • Separate independent clauses joined by and or but.

  • Make new sentences out of which clauses

  • Delete unnecessary words

Let’s look at one example of a long sentence that we can shorten by using these three techniques:

The sentence —

To assist in addressing the ongoing problem of employees in buildings A and B arriving late to work, the company has purchased several electric carts to transport those who work in building A from the parking structure to their building every five minutes, and those in building B will be transported by a bus, which is scheduled to leave the parking structure at 7:30 a.m., 7: 45 a.m., and 8:00 a.m.

— can easily be broken into several sentences

We have found a solution to the ongoing problem of employees in buildings A and B arriving late to work.  For those who work in building A, you will be transported from the parking structure by electric carts.  The carts run every five minutes. Those in building B will be transported by bus. Buses will leave the parking structure at 7:30 a.m., 7:45 a.m., and 8:00 a.m.

As you can see, using short sentences lets the reader focus on one thing at a time. Each idea can be understood in sequence. The eye moves much faster through short, simple sentences.  As a result, there’s no need to skim back to follow the train of thought.

Before Hitting the Print or Send Button

Look at the average length of your sentences. If they surpass the preceding guidelines for easy reading, use our simple techniques to shorten them.
