Deborah Spring Laurel has been a trainer and a consultant in the areas of workplace learning and performance improvement for over thirty years. She has twenty years of experience as the President of Laurel and Associates, Ltd,, an international human resource development training and consulting firm that specializes in enhancing interpersonal dynamics within organizations. Blended Learning Solutions, LLC, was founded to provide custom blends of strategy, technology and learning to meet the wide range of workplace learning needs.    “Blended learning” can be defined as the effective combination of different modes of delivery, models of teaching and styles of learning.  In order to deliver learning, the focus must be on the learning process rather than on training events.

Organizations are facing new challenges, forcing them to rethink training and learning.  Staff, at every level, need to learn more--new information, new technologies and new performance tasks--and more quickly.  To achieve this, we must create learning organizations that “Meet the Changing Face of Learning.” 

This presents challenges beyond the current capabilities of many organizations.  Methods and resources, including the profusion of learning technologies for delivering performance-based learning, are well-developed and readily available. However, they are not always applied effectively or efficiently and in the end may have little or no impact on performance.

Because people learn differently, one approach cannot possibly fit all needs. In addition, a variety of tools and techniques are needed so that learning can occur how, when and where it is needed.  It is important to be able to apply the right delivery option for the content, audience and culture.

Patti is a former President of the Madison-area chapter of ASTD.  She serves as Communications Chair of TEMPO Madison, an organization of women leaders and is on the Advisory Board of the Wisconsin Women’s Business Initiative Corporation.
